馬頭明王像

日本

繪製於十二世紀中葉,日本平安時代(794~1185)作品。明王現大忿怒形,置馬頭於頂,為觀自在菩薩變化身之一。其像被用於息災、滅罪、調伏等修法。在中國八世紀已有馬頭明王像,伴隨著早期不同形式的密教而傳播到韓國、日本。直到十二世紀晚期日本才有明確的禮拜儀軌,十三世紀被尊崇為戰士及馬匹的保護者。
 圖中明王四面八臂,紅身,坐於粉紅色的仰蓮花須彌座上,頂上懸垂華蓋。胸前雙手結印,右下一手作與願印,其餘五手依逆時針方向分持麈尾、法輪、戟、鍚杖及鳥頭淨瓶。依淨瓶的形狀推測係由中國唐代(618~907)的金屬工藝衍生而來。
 華蓋的花環上綴以銀箔,惜因時間久遠變黑,頭髮亦以細碎金箔裝飾。整體畫面塗繪華麗的色彩,並貼飾金、銀箔,加強了明亮度。筆法工細,繁密富麗,多用暗色調,襯托出色澤、質感,洋溢著奢華及宮廷美學的畫風。
