此像約雕造於八至九世紀，為唐代（618～907）白檀木小雕像之精品，傳入日本後於鎌倉正嘉二年（1256）西大寺僧叡尊捐贈給法隆寺。據後來新補台座內的墨書及文獻記載，該像曾供奉於奈良法隆寺聖靈院作為聖德太子侍臣調子丸子孫家傳之主尊像。一九○六年指定為日本重要文化財。
該像包括六臂、裝身飾物等細部及蓮座，由密緻檀木整材雕出。菩薩束高髮髻，頭戴三層寶冠，寶冠正面為化佛坐像，冠旁繒帶垂及肩側，鬢髮覆耳。雙眉與下眼瞼深雕，面頰與下顎飽滿渾圓，五官輪廓鮮明。袒上身，帔帛斜披胸前，著下裙，並於腹前繫結，裙襬垂覆座下，右足支起，左足盤屈平置。身軀施以褐色，瓔珞、腕釧、臂釧等配飾及帛帶、蓮座等皆以漆繪描金，更顯富麗。造像尺寸雖小，形體比例勻稱，刻工精細。
