據《景德傳燈錄》卷二十七載，五代後梁（907～923）明州（今浙江省）奉化縣有一和尚，自稱契此，常以杖荷一布囊，凡供身之具盡貯囊中，見物則乞，人稱「布袋和尚」，傳為彌勒之應化身。
彌勒面相豐腴，眉似彎月，雙眼瞇成一線，鼻頭渾圓，耳厚垂珠，嘴微開露齒而笑，顯得和藹可親。在下巴處加了兩道弧線，使面容更加圓潤歡喜。身軀豐滿，大肚凸出，著敞領寬袖袈裟，衣褶簡潔，袖口及下襬有花朵紋飾。右手輕握布袋的束口置放在右膝上，左手置於左膝，豎左腿屈右腿坐於須彌座上。
該像以三彩陶塑造，釉彩亮麗，對比鮮明。據基座右側碑文，可知造於明成化二十二年（1486）。
