據佛經記載，佛陀至忉利天為母親說法，歷時三月未歸，優填王因此思念成疾，派請毗首羯摩天以旃檀木摹刻了佛陀形象，是為佛像之始。
此尊佛像依旃檀佛形象特徵打造，雙足直立，頭頂高肉髻，面相方圓飽滿。外著通肩袈裟，薄衣貼體，袖口呈波浪狀下垂，衣紋隨形體轉折，流暢圓潤，有曹衣出水之妙。內著雙層裙，褶紋稠密，優美自然。右手上舉施無畏印，左手下垂結與願印。旃檀佛像的典故經過千年歷史綿延至明代（1368～1644）仍有製作，可看出樣式上有很強的繼承性。
