道濟禪師為宋代（960～1279）臨濟宗楊岐派僧，年十八時落髮於浙江杭州靈隱寺，性狂顛，嗜酒肉，號濟顛，師行化軼事頗多。瀕湖居民食螺斷尾，師每乞放水中，螺多活而無尾。
禪師戴破僧帽，側目斜視，張嘴露齒而笑。袒胸，肋骨分明，胸前掛佛珠一串。身著補丁衲衣，釉上施藍彩，色澤明亮，衣紋流暢。右手持破蒲扇，左手拎僧鞋，跣足。
此作生動寫實地掌握了禪師廣為流傳、不拘世俗小節的典型樣貌，油彩敷色的技巧更是爐火純青。
