Wutaishan Xiantong Temple: Statuette of Master Daoji

CHINA, Shanxi, Xinzhou; Qing dynasty

Chan Master Daoji was a monk of the Yangqi branch of the Linji school of Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960–1279). He was tonsured at age 18 at Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou. Also known as Ji Gong, he was renowned for his uninhibited character and unrestrained behavior.
Master Daoji is depicted wearing a ragged cap and glancing upward. He reveals his teeth while laughing heartily, and his chest is bare with his ribs clearly visible. He wears a blue robe with a number of light-colored patches, and chanting beads are strung around his neck. Walking barefoot, Master Daoji carries his monastic shoes in his left hand, and holds a fan in his right.
This work of art brilliantly captures Master Daoji’s character and demeanor.
