Todaiji Temple: Ruyi with Five Lions

角雕五獅子如意 寬平法皇

日本十世紀作品。如意為法師說法及法會時所持之物，為佛教莊嚴具。據《中右記》記載，此如意為寬平法皇，即出家的宇多天皇（887～897在位）所作，贈與奈良東大寺東南院僧聖寶，之後成為該院相傳之寶物。一九○二年指定為日本重要文化財。
如意作長柄式，高88.8公分，犀牛角製。首面寬27.9公分，以弧形相連，形若蝙蝠，周緣以銀鑲邊，表面飾銀板鏤雕的五獅和飛雲紋。五獅子如意之名，源於首部飾獅子紋。柄身上部正反面共飾五枚三股金剛杵紋，均以鉚釘拴上。獅子紋象徵顯教，與象徵密教的三股杵紋合為顯密並學之意。趾部銀質，以魚子紋為地線刻寶相花紋。
