Pilu Temple Vairocana Hall: Four Heavenly Kings

毗盧寺四天王像

位於毗盧殿,其中持國、多聞天王繪於北壁東鋪上層,廣目、增長天王位於北壁西鋪上層。據經典記載,四天王各居於須彌山腰的四方,守護天下,名護世天王。其中持國天王居東方,增長天王居南方,廣目天王居西方,多聞天王又作毗沙門天王,居北方。
 畫中天王頭戴寶冠,濃眉上揚,雙目圓睜,身或披鎧甲,或著戰袍,獸頭護肚。持國天王手持琵琶,作彈奏狀;多聞天王手持寶劍;廣目天王左手持寶珠,右手握蛇,蛇身纏繞臂間;增長天王左手托塔,右手持寶幢。天王面部表情傳神,冠帶、帔帛飛揚,有吳帶當風之勢,動態強烈,在回首顧盼、威武神態中,展現天王守護道場的威勢。
 四天王的形象在明(1368~1644)清(1644~1911)時期的寺院壁畫和造像中已趨形式化,除所持器物較為固定外,其身姿動作亦多有雷同。此畫面中的四天王造型組合樣式亦見於現存多處寺院壁畫中。
