Engakuji Temple Founder’s Hall: Master Wuxue Zuyuan

圓覺寺無學祖元像

日本

位於日本神奈川縣鎌倉市圓覺寺開山堂。從其造型推測係鎌倉弘安九年(1286)示寂前後所雕造,現為日本重要文化財。無學祖元為中國南宋(1127~1279)臨濟宗僧,弘安二年(1279)應鎌倉幕府北條時宗之邀赴日,助時宗二次擊退元寇,為告慰戰歿亡靈,而創建圓覺寺,諡號佛光國師。
 該像較真人小,眼瞳鑲嵌玉石,妝彩。額頭刻劃皺紋,目光炯炯,嘴唇緊閉,表情嚴峻又不失其慈愛,容貌寫實。身披袈裟,原手持拂子,今已佚,結跏趺坐於曲彔上。袖口、衣襟垂下之形式及袈裟左上邊吊掛六角形環扣,乃南宋時代禪僧肖相雕刻之特徵。
