據《觀心寺勘錄緣起資財帳》記載，日本平安元慶七年（883）「唐聖僧像一軀」安置於講堂，傳說係空海從中國請回日本，約雕造於九世紀後半期。該像現藏於大阪觀心寺靈寶館。
此坐像由紅旃檀木整材雕造，眼瞳鑲嵌黑珠，僅兩手腕前端後來以別材補上。肌膚和衣服施有朱、青綠、白色、墨綠等彩色。現比丘形象，雙手持後世補造之如意。臉部稍向左側，目視下方，鼻梁直挺，顴骨高大，長耳及肩，臉上刻劃皺紋，頸部筋脈、鎖骨畢露，神情寫實。
