送子觀音由來可能根據《妙法蓮華經》卷七〈觀世音菩薩普門品〉：「設欲求男，禮拜供養觀世音菩薩，便生福德智慧之男，設欲求女，便生端正有相之女。」所衍生出中國佛教特有的造像。尤其明代（1368～1644）以後，隨著觀音信仰的普及，送子觀音的造像更廣為流行。
此作為明代晚期金漆象牙雕觀音像，面貌圓滿慈祥，束高髮髻，頭披帛巾。右臂懷抱一男童，帔帛隨風飄揚，更顯秀逸脫俗，體現中國傳統女性慈柔的本懷。
