《南詔圖傳》稱此類觀音為「阿嵯耶觀音」，為南詔大理時期（937～1253）密教的特色，傳說觀音在雲南洱海地區曾化現為梵僧，度化大理子民。
此觀音束高髮髻，頂戴一化佛寶冠，耳垂及肩，身形細長高挑，肩膀寬闊，腰身纖細，袒上身，頸飾瓔珞項圈，貼體的長裙襯托出下肢的形體，具濃郁的地方和民族特色。整體揉合了印度、尼泊爾、西藏和緬甸等東南亞地區風格，精美且獨具特色。
