Ahichhatra: Dwarf

藥叉像

印度北方邦阿喜車多羅出土

印度北方邦阿喜車多羅(Ahichhatra, Uttar Pradesh)出土,一般認為原出於秣菟羅(Mathura),應是安置在寺院或窣堵波入口處的一對藥叉像之一,負責守護並嚇退眾惡的邪魔,屬佛教四天王中北方的毗沙門天,亦是財神。
 早期的藥叉造像多半是矮胖圓肚的富人模樣,被視為掌管世界財物的神祇,稱為俱毗羅(Kubera),是毗沙門天的前身。因藥叉居住樹林,而多和枝葉繁茂的大樹一起出現。其造型一般身形矮圓,長相醜陋可笑,從肚臍或口中吐出綿延不盡的藤蔓或蓮花,象徵旺盛的生命力。
 該像螺狀卷髮,圓臉,眼、鼻、口大而凸,鼻下蓄髭,半張的口中牙齒清晰可見。頸部戴花環,大腹滾圓,身軀呈單膝直立的遊戲坐,下半身纏腰布。除雙臂及右腿殘缺,其餘部分保存尚佳。頭頂有一凹陷處,比照現藏於秣菟羅博物館,北方邦秣菟羅馬霍利村(Maholi)附近出土的藥叉像,可推測出其頭頂當初應嵌有一鉢,而雙臂則上舉扶鉢。
