Sandstone
This kneeling dwarf figure is stout in shape with a rounded abdomen. It is believed to originate from Mathura and may once have been one of a pair guarding the entrance of a temple or stupa. The mustached head turns to the left and gazes upward, the mouth half open to reveal the teeth. Though the arms are missing and the legs damaged, the rest of the statue is in good condition. A flower garland is around the dwarf’s neck, and he wears a cloth below his bared torso. There is a sunken indentation on top of the head, which is similar to another dwarf statue from Maholi. Research has suggested a bowl was once balanced there and supported by both hands.
