釋迦三尊及十六善神像

此圖為日本滋賀園城寺舉行般若法會讀誦《大般若波羅蜜多經》時之主尊,繪製於十三世紀。一九○八年指定為日本重要文化財。
 主尊釋迦牟尼佛端坐於中央高台座上。台座兩旁為文殊、普賢二脇侍菩薩;正前方四尊像皆與《大般若經》的受持、傳入關係深厚,右為女神功德天,即吉祥天,左是迦葉尊者,另一說為常啼菩薩,將《大般若經》從印度負笈攜回翻譯的中國唐代(618~907)玄奘三藏,以及守護玄奘渡印的半裸鬼神深沙大將,兩兩相對。畫面兩側分列有現忿怒相的八位善神,即守護此經及其持誦者之十六尊夜叉善神。
 作品構圖齊整,布局左右對稱,技法洗練,筆觸細緻,人物表情生動。以暗褐色為背景,塗繪朱、綠青等色彩,使用細金、金泥裝飾,表現含蓄渾厚的風格。
 十六善神又作十六神王、十六大藥叉將、般若十六善神、般若守護十六善神。據《陀羅尼集經》第三般若波羅蜜多大心經記載,因為守護誦持《般若心經》者,故被視為大般若經的護法神。平安(794~1185)末鎌倉(1185~1333)初期,主尊釋牟尼佛兩旁有二聲聞、梵天、帝釋天及十六善神,左右對稱配置;或釋迦十六善神像,加繪四尊菩薩。此四尊菩薩分別為普賢、文殊、《大般若經》所記述的常啼菩薩與法涌菩薩;或增加玄奘三藏及守護者深沙大將畫像,此布局盛行於鎌倉時代以後。
