Meeting Between Yaoshan and Li Ao

此圖屬禪會圖,描繪唐代(618~907)朗州刺史李翱問道於禪僧藥山惟儼的情景,是宋(960~1279)元(1271~1368)時代常見的禪畫題材。作品有馬公顯之落款。馬公顯生卒年不詳,馬興祖之子,馬遠之伯父,曾任職南宋紹興年間(1131~1162)畫院待詔,善畫花鳥、山水及人物,得自家傳,作品不多見。此圖為中國南宋(1127~1279)作品,現為日本重要文化財。
 據《景德傳燈錄》卷十四記載,李翱拜見藥山惟儼禪師,惟儼讀經不加理會。李翱性急,便說:「見面不如聞名。」不料惟儼問說:「太守因何貴耳賤目?」李翱拱手稱謝,並問:「如何是道?」只見惟儼指指天空,又指瓶子,李翱不知所以,惟儼便說:「雲在青天水在瓶。」李翱乃欣愜作禮而述一偈:「練得身形似鶴形,千株松下兩函經,我來問道無餘說,雲在青天水在瓶。」
 禪家啟發學人,其言語不落跡象,謂之機鋒語;禪畫即是有形象的機鋒語。畫中松樹下惟儼坐於竹椅上,身體前傾,以雙手示上下,表「雲在青天水在瓶」,透露出無盡的禪機妙用。身前石桌上置經函與瓶梅,梅枝倒掛,禪意盎然。高頸瓷瓶、瓶下以木座承托,是宋代常見的樣式。李翱身著官服立於石桌前。畫面採對角線構圖,松枝勁健,呈「拖枝」形態,人物衣紋描法勁利工穩。
