醍醐寺五重塔壁畫

位於日本京都市伏見區醍醐東大路町醍醐寺五重塔第一層塔心柱壁面、板壁,為木板彩繪。繪製於平安天曆五年(951),推測約與五重塔同時完成。塔心柱壁面、板壁等處之繪畫,共十八面,內容有胎藏界和金剛界兩部曼荼羅圖諸尊像、真言八祖像、八方天像等,表現密教曼荼羅空間,為平安時代(794~1185)少數壁畫中的重要作品。一九七六年指定為日本國寶。
 塔心柱四面板壁中,東面以金剛界曼荼羅九會中的成身會為中心,配列有一印會、三昧耶會之三會。西面以胎藏界曼荼羅之中台八葉院的毗盧遮那佛為中心,描繪有普賢、慈氏彌勒、文殊及觀音等。南、北面分別配置中台八葉院縱面左右側部分。
 周圍腰壁八面繪真言八祖像,乃據僧空海自中國唐代(618~907)攜回李真的五祖像所繪,為最早的真言八祖圖像系譜摹本,其中一幅善無畏已佚。八方天像分別繪帝釋天主東方、伊舍那天主東北方、焰魔天主南方、火天主東南方、水天主西方、羅剎天主西南方、毗沙門天主北方、風天主西北方。
 圖中諸尊排列整齊,比例適度,姿態端正,筆觸均衡,色彩密緻,身軀以紅線勾描,再施加濃色暈染,留傳唐代繪畫風格。背光和台座施加漸層彩色,以木色為底,搭配對比的紅色系和青綠色系,傾向柔和溫雅的色調,被視為平安時代中期的標準作品,明顯地唐代畫風逐漸淡薄,形成和樣化的趨向。
