位於日本奈良縣葛城市當麻寺金堂，為該堂之主尊。是日本塑像中現存年代最早的作品。頭與身軀相較，頭部比例顯得碩大，近乎球形，張力十足，極具量感的表現，接近韓國新羅時期（57 BCE～935）的石佛，推測係該寺創建時期，約天武天皇九年（681），由朝鮮半島渡日的匠師所製。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
佛像高219.7公分，面貌圓潤豐頰，雙眉呈弧線形，額頭正中留有白毫的痕跡，眼瞼微開，鼻挺，厚唇緊閉；頭部、頸部及體軀幾乎相連，予人矮胖之感。著袒右袈裟，右手施無畏印，左手輕置膝上，結跏趺坐於束腰須彌座上，懸裳覆於座前。身後為木造的透雕飛天背光，內有二重圓相，頭光、身光相連，圈帶刻飾花紋圖案。全體漆繪金箔，富裝飾性。手臂、飛天背光及束腰須彌座推測為鎌倉時代（1185～1333）中期補修。
