十二天像

作品依據中國唐代(618~907)不空譯《金剛頂瑜伽護摩儀軌》描繪,共十二幅,每幅高160公分,寬135公分。約繪製於九世紀中葉,是日本十二天像中現存年代最早的遺品,平安時代(794~1185)前期佛畫之代表作。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
 十二天原為古印度諸神,被佛教吸收後,主要出現於密教的曼荼羅中,成為守護密教壇場的護法神。十二天即北方毗沙門天、東北方伊舍那天、東方帝釋天、東南方火天、南方焰摩天、西南方羅剎天、西方水天、西北方風天,梵天、地天、日天、月天,他們專司四方四維、天地及日月。
 圖中十二天中除毗沙門天足踏地神、地天立於雲上之外,其餘各乘鳥獸座。有菩薩、武士、仙人、力士、裸形等多種造型。
 每幅各描繪一尊天像,占滿整個畫面,兩側趺坐侍者,體軀偏小,構圖安定。主尊身後為淡彩圓形頭光,背景繪有狀似靈芝形的雲紋,為吉祥紋之一。
 此組作品雖部分色彩脫落,但仍見顏色以對比的赤、綠色為主,襯以紅、藍,用渲染技法產生濃淡變化,表現豐腴的體軀。其輕快細緻的線描、柔和的賦彩,被視為承襲奈良時代(710~794)南都平城京(今奈良)之畫風。
