傳原位於日本京都東山若王子社，因明治時代（1868～1912）神佛分離之影響而流入民間，近年成為國有。雕造於九世紀，體軀至台座由檜木整材雕成，再接合兩隻手腕，像未內刳，是典型的平安時代（794～1185）初期一木造像，像高49.7公分。一九五三年指定為日本國寶。
佛頭上有高肉髻，雙目垂視，鼻下短小，嘴角兩端凹進，輪廓銳利，為其面貌特徵。右手作無畏印，左手結與願印（兩手指已有缺損），結跏趺坐於八重蓮花座上；雙膝自蓮座處大幅度地向外伸出，兩手腕位置較低，腰沉，呈安定坐姿。頭部略向前傾，溜肩，背部厚實。植入的螺髮以乾漆作成，並塗以群青，唇部施加朱紅，眉、眼、髭等處以墨描繪。
