此佛頭像鼻梁高挺，大眼，臉形呈長橢圓形，波狀卷髮，極具古典希臘藝術風格，然高聳的肉髻、眉間的白毫和大耳依舊具備佛陀的基本相貌特徵。耳垂留有耳洞，代表釋迦原有的貴族身分，其面貌表情柔和，頸部微向右傾的姿態，眼瞼和髮上存留敷彩的痕跡，整體造型優雅安詳而生動。
依據佛頭的比例推測，此造像原應與真人等身。臉部係模製而成，而頭髮和白毫及其他裝飾則為手塑。頭後呈平板的表面，顯示該頭像原來應該附著於牆上或帶頭光，並非全然的圓雕作品，屬寺院塑像之一。此類臉部模製像亦發現於犍陀羅地區。依其造像風格，推測係出自阿富汗哈達（Hadda）或巴基斯坦塔克西拉古城（Taxila）。
