真言七祖像

中國

屬真言宗法脈相承祖師像。繪製於九世紀。七幅真言宗祖師肖像畫中,金剛智、善無畏、不空、一行、惠果等五位祖師像,出於中國唐代(618~907)宮廷畫師李真之手。唐元和元年(806),日本僧人空海自中國學成歸日時,由其師惠果授予。空海歸國後向朝廷奉納的《弘法大師請來目錄》,內容記有此項佛畫物品。日本平安弘仁十二年(821)再加繪龍猛、龍智二位祖師像,合為「真言七祖像」。七祖中,一行、惠果為中國僧人,一行更是中國史上著名的天文學家;其餘五祖皆為印度僧人,其中金剛智、善無畏、不空是入唐弘法者。此七幅畫是研究唐代人物肖像之珍貴史料,亦是日本最早的真言密教系譜作品、日本肖像畫中最古之作。作品已破損脫色,然畫面形象至今仍存,長期以來為日本肖像畫家所效法的範本。一九五三年指定為日本國寶。
 每幅畫像皆以三幅絹面黏接而成,圖像以纖細的筆觸勾出舒緩的線條,再施以暈染。像均取側身斜向坐姿,座前放置鞋子、水瓶,為古代祖師像的標準形式,僅惠果像旁侍立童子。畫中梵、漢名號及像下各祖師之行狀文,乃空海親筆所書,字跡翻飛起伏,用飛白體書寫,是珍貴的書法作品。
 七祖像中,除惠果以靠背椅為坐具外,其餘均趺坐於四足方榻上。自漢(206 BCE~220)至唐,中國流行牀、榻、交椅、凳等坐具,而在李真繪像時,已有靠背椅出現,為中國的家具史提供了可靠的例證。
