法華寺十一面觀音菩薩像

位於日本奈良市法華寺町法華寺本堂,為該堂之主尊。約雕造於九世紀上半葉。根據《興福寺濫觴記》記載,此尊觀音乃依照光明皇后在蓮池中散步的模樣而雕,由印度犍陀羅的名匠雕造,共有三尊,一尊在施眼寺,一尊在法華寺,一尊被攜回印度。此尊祕佛,一年只開放十五天供人禮拜。一九五一年指定為日本國寶。
 此尊除頭上十一面、兩手腕及垂落的帔帛等部分外,從髮髻至台座由整材榧木雕出,體軀不刳空,但頭部後面內刳再嵌上蓋板,推測當時內有裝藏品。造型強調頭部與軀幹的厚實感,面容具印度式的豐腴,腹部鮮明凹紋,表現量感,腰稍向左扭,右手長至膝蓋,握帔帛;重心置於左足,右足踏出至蓮台邊緣,翹起的右腳拇指似跨步而行,下裙及帔帛的雕法以翻波式刀法刻成,大膽強調衣褶的動感,更加表現其洗練的風格。背光以呈放射狀的蓮苞和卷起的蓮葉表現,造型特殊。
 菩薩的眼瞳鑲銅,顯示平安時代(794~1185)雕像作風。寶冠、臂釧、腕釧及垂髮,也以銅片製成,表現立體感。除頭髮及五官施加彩色外,全身以素木潤飾而成,呈現細膩勻稱的紋理。
