釋尊成道前降魔之事蹟，諸經記載甚多，如《佛本行經》卷三〈降魔品〉、《佛所行讚》卷三〈破魔品〉、《普曜經》卷六〈降魔品〉等，均有詳述之。
此犍陀羅作品，悉達多太子結跏趺坐於菩提樹下金剛座上，台座敷吉祥草，左手殘損，右手觸地，作降魔印。周圍環繞魔王波旬與眾多魔眾，或獸頭人身，或怒髮暴牙，或腹有顏面，或腳踩獅頭，個個面目猙獰；手中執刀、棍棒、三叉戟、槍等武器，用以攻擊，或以蛇威嚇，亦有假面帶笑勸誘者，又有妖豔魔女施以魅惑。對於魔眾的威嚇、誘惑，太子神態自若，不為所動，僅以手指地，魔眾即驚恐潰散。台座前在葉叢中現半身的地神，形似毗沙門天形象，即刻踊出，合掌仰望，證明太子之福業勝德。
