Life of the Buddha - Defeat of Mara and Enlightenment

PAKISTAN

Prince Siddhartha is seated under the Bodhi tree, having been challenged by Mara, and calls Prthivi, the Earth Goddess, to witness his enlightenment by touching the ground with his right hand. Immediately the crowned goddess springs up, surrounded by foliage.
The prince is being assaulted by Mara’s army, who brandish a variety of weapons. There is one who threatens him with a snake and two others clamber onto the head of the lions at the foot of his throne. Some demons are portrayed with the head of a beast, some with disheveled hair and baring their fangs, and others have an extra face on their abdomen. Mara stands in the background with one hand around a column, abashed at the failure of the onslaught.
