五百羅漢圖 吉山明兆

此作原有五十幅,每幅高173.6公分,寬89.4公分,各描繪十尊羅漢,構成五百羅漢圖。原屬日本京都東福寺,其後部分散逸至寺外。可確認者,現今東福寺傳存四十五幅,東京根津美術館二幅,合計四十七幅。畫中無作者題款,由作風及種種記錄判斷是出自東福寺畫僧吉山明兆之筆。據性海靈見的《東福羅漢供跋》之史料,明兆於日本南北朝永德三年(1383)開始繪製五百羅漢圖,至德三年(1386)完成,是年用於東福寺羅漢供。據傳是明兆在三十歲時的大作,現為日本重要文化財。
 人物造型寫實,表情生動,神態自然,筆法工整,線條細勁流暢,衣著設色鮮麗,衣褶勁挺。以雲海、丘壑、山巖、曲折的欄杆、亭台樓榭或地獄景象等為背景。從其圖樣觀察,明兆是以中國南宋(1127~1279)至元代(1271~1368)間新傳入日本的寧波佛畫等中國畫為基礎而繪製,是日本少數現存五百羅漢圖連幅作品,彌足珍貴。
