此法語為隱元禪師說明參禪的要領，應簡單明確，念念圓明，才能根塵頓斷，靈光獨耀。
隱元擅詩文、書畫，接引學人機鋒峻烈，因此在書風的表現上，亦有風馳電掣之禪風。此書中鋒行筆，用筆圓轉，線條遒勁有力，一如修行的平和內斂，悠遊自在的心境。
隱元隆琦俗姓林，字曾昺，號子房。法名隆琦，號隱元。明（1368～1644）末清（1644～1911）初臨濟宗禪僧。福建福清人。住持黃檗山萬福寺時，振興祖風，擴建寺院。後應邀赴日弘法，創立日本黃檗宗，對日本近世佛教影響重大，御賜「大光普照國師」。
