朝鮮時期（1392～1910）中葉，禪畫隨著禪宗的風行而興盛，此作為韓國最具代表的禪畫之一。
達摩戴風帽，風帽輪廓線與衣紋皆用粗筆，線條沉穩利落，運筆強而有力，以大膽的筆觸表現出菩提達摩禪定的內在精神世界，反映作者無拘無束的性格，其風景、人物禪畫中，也可看到類似之特徵。圖左側題有金明國之號「蓮潭」，下鈐「蓮潭」、「金氏明國」朱文方章。
金明國字天汝，號蓮潭、醉翁。韓國朝鮮中期浙派畫家代表之一。安山（今京畿道安山市）人。雖傳承安堅派畫風，然筆致遒勁有力、自由奔放，作品多具有浙派後期狂派畫風。以簡筆法作畫，表現內在精神世界，世人稱其為構思粗獷、筆法豪放的韓國畫家代表。
