生於六三七年,卒於七三五年。唐代(618~907)密宗僧。東印度烏荼國(今印度奧里薩邦,Orissa)人。為佛陀季父甘露飯王之後裔,十三歲繼承王位,因內亂而讓位出家,後至中印度那爛陀寺,投達摩鞠多座下,學習密法,盡得其傳。八十歲時奉師命東傳佛法,開元四年(716)經絲路抵達長安(今陝西西安),玄宗(712~756在位)禮為國師。首傳密法於中國,為唐代密宗胎藏界的傳入者,與金剛智、不空合稱開元三大士。
 重要譯典有《大毗盧遮那成佛神變加持經》,即《大日經》;《蘇悉地羯羅經》;《蘇婆呼童子請問經》等密宗經典。擅長工巧藝術,相傳其自製模型,鑄造金銅靈塔,並繪製曼荼羅圖,皆精妙絕倫,對漢地佛教藝術具影響作用。
