Originally There Was Nothing

本來無一物 吳涵

「本來無一物」源自《六祖壇經》中惠能的偈頌,說明世間萬物都是空假不實、緣起性空的。
 此印是五字的朱文方章,以篆刻作品而言,五字的印文排列是屬於高難度的,通常會用平穩的繆篆布局,而這方印的空間安排特殊,是以小篆字體完成,印面的篆書若金繩鐵鎖,簡明有力,用刀雄健;布局大疏大密,是深得「疏可走馬,密不容針」之神采。
 筆畫懸殊的二字是「無」繁、「一」簡。「無」字筆畫雖繁複,但所占的位置較多,所以不顯得擁塞,而「一」字雖然單純的一畫,但植於厚實的底線上方,看起來不至於有單薄之感,上緊下鬆,繁簡形成對比,顯得生動多變。
 吳涵字子茹,號藏龕、臧堪,乳名湖兒、壺兒。浙江安吉人。為吳昌碩次子,淵源家學,訓詁、書法、篆刻、繪畫無所不能;篆刻尤為所長,於亂頭粗服中寓法度,行刀亦衝亦切,作品老辣蒼莽,一如其父。昌碩晚年作品大都委由弟子徐星州、吳涵代刀作印。
