生卒年不詳；一說約生於九四○年，卒於一○一○年。北宋（960～1127）畫家。成都（今四川成都）人。繼承家學，工畫釋、道人物，師法曹不興及吳道子，運筆快捷，施色鮮潤。北宋太宗（976～997在位）時任畫院翰林待詔。開寶八年（975）奉旨重修開封相國寺壁畫，倣高益舊本修之，畫大殿西壁降魔變相，及大殿後壁擎塔天王像二堵，其畫有出牆之譽。黃庭堅評其「落筆高妙，名不虛得也」。
惜作品已失傳，目前僅數幅版畫傳世，以日本京都清凉寺所藏版畫彌勒菩薩像為代表，極為精細。畫中彌勒結跏趺坐於蓮座，衣紋稠疊繁密，當由曹衣出水風格變化而來；二女天衣飄揚，尚保存吳帶當風的餘韻。
