Gao Wenjin

CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu; Northern Song dynasty

Gao Wenjin was a painter who was skilled in illustrating Buddhist and Daoist figures. During the rule of Emperor Taizong (reigned 976–997) of the Song dynasty, he served as painter-in-attendance and was requested to work on the murals at Xiangguo Temple in Henan. Gao emulated the original mural painted by Gao Yi and illustrated his own depiction of the Defeat of Mara on the west wall, as well as the Two Heavenly Kings Holding a Pagoda on the back wall of the temple’s main hall.
His works were highly regarded and include the delicate printing blocks of Maitreya Bodhisattva, which are currently kept at Seiryoji Temple in Japan.
