Washing the Elephants

洗象圖是明(1368~1644)末較為流行的題材,如丁雲鵬、崔子忠等都有代表性的作品流傳下來。「相」與「象」同音,以「洗象」象徵「洗相」,乃為破除一切名相的執著。《七佛傳法偈》之毗婆尸佛偈曰:「身從無相中受生,猶如幻出諸形象。幻人心識本來無,罪福皆空無所住。」
 圖中兩頭六牙大象立於溪邊,一紅衣男子立於象背上往下淋水,另一戴冠男子正用大刷子刷洗另一頭大象,其側有三人觀看。象身用線如卷雲一般顫掣起伏,人物衣紋用線則多為突顯方折、屈曲有力之顫筆,富有裝飾趣味。觀看洗象者中,最前面一位為中年文士形貌,披髮,觀其頭頂肉髻,知為佛像。以此形象表現佛的手法亦見於上海博物館藏崔子忠於明崇禎四年(1631)繪的白描佛像以及臺北故宮博物院藏的掃象圖。
 此圖左上方原有款印,後被刮去,畫上收藏印均為清宮內府的鑑藏印。此圖原籤題稱為宋人畫,然從風格上看,其構圖、風格和臺北故宮博物院藏另一幅崔子忠的掃象圖極為相似,故推測此圖亦應為崔子忠作品。
