書寫內容為《妙法蓮華經》，以一行十五字的粗體大字抄寫，故又稱《大字法華經》。成於日本奈良時代（710～794），原應有八卷，現第三卷已不存。另卷內有和歌山高野山開山名僧明算的跋語「願以此緣 不經三祇 一念之間速證佛位釋子明算」、「願以此緣生密嚴國佛子明算」。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
此書用筆厚實，提按全力為之而節奏分明，自在自信地展現著毫端變化，再加上扁方如端正危坐的結字，既使人有莊嚴恢弘之感，又宛如望見好相紛呈的境界，是件品質相當好的作品。
