此二組瓦當分別為日本八世紀與十二世紀作品，皆是岡山縣赤磐郡瀨戶町万富瓦窯之製品。
一組瓦當為奈良時代（710～794）東大寺創建時期建築物屋檐筒瓦頭部，多從該寺大佛殿院及僧坊、西塔遺址出土。圓形，直徑19公分；半弧形，寬27.2公分。圓形中央配置蓮花紋，半弧形中央為卷草紋樣，周圍均以聯珠紋環繞，亦稱為東大寺式瓦。
另一組是鎌倉時代（1185～1333）東大寺重建時期之物。圓形，直徑20.3公分；半弧形，寬35.8公分。圓形中央蓮瓣紋環繞之圓相內書種子梵字及「東大寺大佛殿」字樣，周緣飾浮凸聯珠紋。半弧形中間亦書「東大寺大佛殿」，上下緣飾聯珠紋。
