雙林寺四天王像

中國

位於天王殿南壁門兩側。據經典記載,四天王各住在須彌山腰的四方,守護天下,名護世天王。其中持國天王居東方,增長天王居南方,廣目天王居西方,多聞天王又作毗沙門天王,居北方。在中國佛寺中多設有四天王殿,以鎮守伽藍。
 此四天王均呈坐姿,頭戴高冠,身形魁梧,身著鎧甲戰裙,胸前或結帶,或佩方、圓形飾物,腰繫革帶,著護腹、護腕,腹間飾盤龍紋,突顯天王威武氣勢,足蹬戰靴,靴上虎頭或閉目或睜目。東方持國天王高鼻細目,神情內斂,親切和善,眉毛及髮鬢以筆繪,髭鬚則繪塑並用。廣目、增長、多聞三尊天王均濃眉,眉棱隆起,雙目圓睜,額頭高凸,耳大鼻厚,神情勇猛豪邁。
