觀音猿鶴圖 牧谿

一組三幅,分別畫觀音、猿、鶴。三幅均鈐有足利義滿收藏印,可知最早為義滿將軍收藏,後由京都妙心寺住持太原崇孚贈與大德寺。觀音圖左下方署「蜀僧法常謹製」,鈐「牧谿」朱文印。牧谿,法名法常,號牧谿,蜀(今四川)人,生卒年不詳,南宋(1127~1279)末在中國浙江杭州西湖長慶寺為僧。擅長畫佛像、釋道人物及花果、山水、鳥獸,題材廣泛,畫風近石恪、梁楷,是有名的禪僧畫家。此圖一九五一年指定為日本國寶。
 觀音端坐於舖有柔軟香草的岩石之上,旁置淨瓶。觀音四周如《大方廣佛華嚴經》卷六十八所述,在「巖谷之中,泉流縈映,樹木蓊鬱,香草柔軟,右旋布地。」菩薩頂戴化佛冠,冠上頭巾與身上的白衣連成一體;耳飾環,胸飾瓔珞,均象徵性的點綴,淡雅素淨中不失莊嚴。人物衣紋用淡墨,圓潤流暢;岩石用披麻皴。通幅以水墨為主,意境超然,筆法高妙,是牧谿上乘之作。
 猿圖繪一對子母猿踞於松幹上,子猿依偎在母猿懷裡,在萬籟俱寂中俯視萬丈深淵,形象生動。松樹枝幹斜穿畫面,以淡墨皴出;葛藤用濃墨描繪,松針以散鋒用濃淡墨乾筆擦出。雙猿刻劃精緻,以濃墨乾筆描繪猿毛,真實地表現出茸茸的質感。
 鶴圖繪一隻丹頂鶴,自竹林中疾走奔出,引頸鳴叫。畫鶴工緻寫實,畫背景叢林簡括瀟灑,直接用濃淡墨畫竹竿、竹葉。猿、鶴二圖,是牧谿禪畫的代表作之一。畫幅大面積留白,創造出「畫外之意」,無筆墨處也是妙境。
 三幅一組並列,自然和諧。畫家於筆墨之中蘊含妙趣禪機。
