Illustrated Manuscript of the Prince Vessantara Jataka

THAILAND

These are two of the eight pairs of illustrations found in a 28-fold palm leaf manuscript from the Bangkok period (1782–present). In Pali Jataka No. 547, of the Prince Vessantara Jataka, which describes the Buddha’s acts of generosity in a previous life, emphasizes the merits of giving, and is greatly respected in Thailand. The illustrations are not directly related to the content of the jataka. Instead, they depict pairs of curving trees surrounded by a natural landscape. Animals and birds are shown within the branches and beside the trees. Beside the illustrations there are red bands decorated with golden scrolling patterns.
