The work is of imaginative simplicity and depicts a stylized version of an Indian stupa with a shallow drum surmounted by a hemispherical bowl. The harmika platform with its parasol is now missing. Seated against the stupa is the Buddha in the traditional teaching position on a four-legged throne with legs pendent and hands in Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. Both the head and eyes are lowered. The plain circular nimbus is set against the unadorned bowl of the stupa. The composition is mounted on a many-layered lotus blossom whose individual petals are sculpted in detail.
