Headrest

CHINA; Sui to Tang dynasty

This rare offering of a soapstone headrest is in the form of a rectangular cuboid with a slightly concave upper surface. One face contains reliefs of two seated lions with long manes, tails raised, and mouths wide open. They appear brave, majestic, and formidable. The opposite side features a relief of two dragons facing one another with tails rising upward. Each end has reliefs of auspicious creatures, and all sides are bordered by floral patterns.
