Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Dali Kingdom

Avalokitesvara stands holding a willow branch in the right hand and a vase in the left hand. The Bodhisattva is mainly identified by the Buddha image on the headdress. The figure’s face is quite large with coarse features. A pair of floral earrings hangs from the ears and many other pieces of jewelry are worn. The most notable jewelry piece is the looped string of beads that falls downward to the flaring skirt hem at the feet. A stole hangs diagonally across the chest, and more stoles are draped about the body.
