Amitabha Buddha

Gray limestone

Amitabha Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The Buddha sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne balanced on a square base. One arm rests on the thigh while the other arm is missing. The eyelids are lowered as if in contemplation. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. A broken nimbus is visible behind the Buddha’s head, intersecting with a larger mandorla that is also partly broken. An inscription on the base includes the names of the donors, the year when the sculpture was completed, and the reason for its creation.
