Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty

Avalokitesvara is seated cross-legged and wears a decorative floral crown with a small standing Buddha in a niche. The Bodhisattva has a full face with downcast compassionate eyes. The figure wears a stole over an inner robe, and a long skirt that is sculpted in simple folds. A jeweled necklace is around the neck, and a long string of ornamental beads crosses at the waist and wraps around the legs. The statue’s left hand is missing while the right hand is steadied on the upper thigh. The entire figure is sculpted with clean, strong lines.
