Arhat

Marble

Arhat

CHINA; Tang dynasty

This relief incorporates the techniques of bas-relief and engraving. The figure’s face is in profile while the rest of the body sits on a cushion in the posture of royal ease. The head is portrayed with the long nose common to many Arhat figures and is probably meant to suggest his Indian origin. The nimbus, shaved head, and monastic robes indicate that this is a Buddhist monk. The figure’s gaze is centered on the prayer beads that are held high in the left hand while the right hand rests at the chest. There are five columns of inscriptions on either side the image concerning the restoration of Zhenhai Temple by the monk Xiushan in the year 629.
