Standing Bodhisattva

Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty

The Bodhisattva wears a headdress behind which is positioned a wheel-shaped nimbus surrounded by flames. A long medallion ornament hangs from the shoulders and loops down to the knees. The right hand is raised with palm upward to shoulder level, while the left hand is even with the waist and holds a vase. A skirt falls from the waist, and flares outwards below the top of the lotus pedestal on which the figure is standing with bare feet splayed. The pedestal is in turn supported on an octagonal openwork stand.
