Portable Shrine with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Avalokitesvara wears a tall, conical crown with a Buddha image. The face is round with long eyebrows, big eyes, a straight nose, and a tiny mouth. A robe covers both shoulders, and the bent right arm is held in front of the chest, the hand is missing however. The left hand, holding a vase, is held in front of the abdomen. The Bodhisattva sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne.
The top of the image is carved with mountain rocks. At the bottom a patron stands on either side of the Bodhisattva. They look upward showing piety and respect.
