Seated Buddha

Gilt bronze

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The well-proportioned Buddha was created in the Late Tang period (846–907). The figure sits in full lotus posture upon a simple disc. The head, with its elongated ears, is inclined forward and the long eyes are focused downwards. The wavy hair is influenced by the Gandharan style. The Buddha wears a realistically folded monastic robe over the left shoulder. Both hands are raised at the chest in a mudra. Originally, the figure rested on a lotus throne with a mandorla at the back.
