Standing Bodhisattva

Gilt bronze

Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA; Northern Wei dynasty

The Bodhisattva stands out in mid-relief from the leaf-shaped mandorla, surrounded by a circular nimbus and a radiating aureole. The outer rim is incised with flame patterns. The Bodhisattva wears a long garment that flows outward, and a neck ornament that hangs to the waist. The right hand is held in the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left hand falls at the side. The figure stands on a pedestal in the shape of an inverted bowl, which is in turn mounted on a four-legged stand. The stand is inscribed with the year 529.
