Embroidery of Arhats’ Pilgrimage to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sits on a rock in full lotus position at the top of the frame, surrounded by clouds and waves. The Arhats stands among the clouds and on bridges and platforms between rock formations. Some of them hold a stupa, one holds a staff, one rides a tiger, and some sit in meditation.
The embroidery is done with the fine lines and elegant colors that are characteristic of the Gu family style. The predominant colors are red, yellow, and mineral green. The exquisite detail of the trees is reminiscent of landscape painting, which is a feature of the Gu family style and is especially pleasing. The figures are particularly vivid and lively.
