Embroidery of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva

CHINA; Qing dynasty

This embroidery was created by Shi Zongshu, and dates from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is portrayed with a round face, a topknot with a large pin, and a nimbus. In addition to a necklace, armlet, and bracelet, a silk stole drapes down from the shoulders. Samantabhadra reads a sutra while sitting on a white elephant in royal ease position. The elephant lies on the ground and looks to one side with its mouth open and teeth exposed.
